The cheapest way to get a good helmet colour ( or button ) is to mix 1 tin of Humbrol matt66 (grey) with 1/2 tin of humbrol matt116 green, the real helmets had colour variation & I think this is quite close, you can apply the paint by a small brush, it will need to go onto a keyed surface so you will have to flat down the basecoat with say 400 grade wet & dry paper, no need for primer or undercoat, when dry add your decal, leave it a day or two to dry, then overcoat the whole thing in clear matt humbrol spray laquer, the decals have a tendancy to react if to much spray it put over them so light coats on the decal at first, the laquer makes the whole thing durable

Good shout, Steve! Have bought my Humbrols for a couple of quid, and painted my buttons and my spare Heer buckle, in preparation for my late war Hauptmann in splinter tunic. 8)

I thought it was OK. Almost exactly the same colour as the grenade can.
